This lighthouse has been considered one of the most important on the Atlantic Coast due to the dangerous nature of the cape where it is located and the numerous shoals surrounding it, some of which extend a considerable distance from the shore.
The configuration of Cape Corrubedo is flat and only slightly elevated above sea level. It is part of the Barbanza Peninsula and marks the southern entrance to the Ría de Muros.
