At the entrance to the Ría de Vigo, acting as a defensive barrier, lie the Cíes Islands, an archipelago composed of the islands of Monteagudo, Faro, and San Martiño. These islands serve as a natural shelter and protect against the strong waves coming from the Atlantic Ocean.
Due to the strategic location of the Cíes Islands, in the mid-19th century, the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company of the port of Vigo requested that the Ministry of State install a lighthouse to assist ships in accessing the port, as well as those arriving from America and heading to northern Europe.
