Sargadelos Ceramic Factory
Ref: 05005080
Description:
The current Sargadelos Ceramics Factory is a heterogeneous industrial complex made up of several buildings and facilities linked together by a network of towers and walkways. In this production centre (s has another one in O Castro, A Coruña) are located the central services and management of the companies.
Due to the cultural vocation of the company, the manufacturing plants are complemented by a Museum of Ceramics and a Tavern decorated with valuable murals by Luis Seoane. The complex was declared a Property of Cultural Interest (BIC) in January 2015. The most singular building and the origin of the current s is the Circular Plant, whose ceramic representation we offer you.
Work began in 1968, on land next to the former Royal Factories of Sargadelos. The idea was to start a project for the cultural regeneration of Galicia promoted by Isaac Díaz Pardo and Luis Seoane. The ceramics manufacturing begins in an area of this unique Circular Plant and runs in parallel to the ending of the rest of the buildings. The complex was inaugurated on 10 May 1970. The concept of a circular industrial plant is truly innovative and daring.
It was a response to the functional and, above all, intellectual requirement of a linear production process in which beginning and end converge. At the same time, it must become a place of reference to encourage relationships between people, cultural activities and that would become a symbol of identity. This first building, the Circular Plant, has become a symbol over the years. The enveloping shape around the patio achieves a representative image that is closer to the cultural than to the industrial.
Each of the different production sections took up a sector of the circular crown, which made easier the individual expansion of these sections by adding eccentric attachments. The architectural language combines tradition and modernity, not only in the forms but also in the materials, with the expressionism of the radially conceived concrete structure present throughout the building being outstanding.
But the functional deficiencies made the production process very expensive, so in 1984 new buildings were inaugurated, better adapted to the needs of the company’s ceramic production, with the Circular Plant being used for management, creation and design activities.
This ceramic piece aims to pay a small tribute to this first building in which the innovative and regenerative idea that evokes the current s was started and materialised.
